El Bola, released in 2000, is a film about an abused boy who finds, upon meeting a new friend, that family life can be kind and gentle. Twelve-year-old Pablo (Juan Jose Balestra), is embarrassed by his family. His father (Manuel Mor''n) is a violent tyrant, his mother is weak, a wreck of a woman, and his grandmother wets herself. In his spare time he plays chicken with oncoming trains. Everyone calls him "Pellet." Pablo has no real friends until Alfredo (Pablo Galan) arrives as a new student at his school. Alfredo's carefree hipster father Jose (Alberto Jimenez) is the polar opposite of Pablo. Jose runs a tattoo parlor, and though he's a strict father, he's also loving. As Pablo and Alfredo's friendship grows, the dichotomy between their fathers' parenting styles reaches a boiling point. How far will Pablo's dad go to keep his violent hold over his family? Directed by Achero Ma''as ("Noviembre"), El Bola was called by critics "exceptional," "compelling" and "visceral." El Bola won more than 30 awards internationally.moreless
