El Dorado is a classic western about a hired-hand Cole Thornton (John Wayne), who is forced to help out his friend J.P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum), the former sheriff of El Dorado, who is now the town drunk and laughing stock. After previously leaving town, Thornton is hired by the shady, wealthy rancher, Bart Jason (Ed Asner). Once Thornton is informed by Jason's newly hired hand Nelson McLeod (Christopher George), that Jason's plans include a range war against Kevin McDonald's (R.G. Armstrong) family -- which also pits him against his now drunken friend Harrah -- Thornton quits. Along the way, Thornton befriends the knife-wielding young gambler Mississippi (James Caan), who is out to avenge the murder of his former guardian. Once in El Dorado, Thornton finds that the situation is more dire than he expected. He is now forced to sober up his friend, who was once a highly respected sheriff and fend off Bart Jason's men before the town erupts into a full scale war.
