El Mariachi is a 1992 action film and the debut of acclaimed writer/director Robert Rodriguez. The film stars Carlos Gallardo as El Mariachi, a Mexican guitarist who dreams of following in the footsteps of his father and his father's father as a professional mariachi. His journey leads him to the small town of Acuna, Mexico, where he stops for a while to look for work in the local cantinas. Reinol Martinez plays Azul, an escaped convict who has returned to Acuna looking for revenge against his former partner, Moco. Moco's hitmen are on the lookout for Azul, who bears the description of a man dressed in black with a guitar case full of guns. As the war between the criminals paints the streets red, El Mariachi finds himself unknowingly caught in the middle as he is repeatedly mistake for Azul because of his black clothes and guitar case. As the bullets fly, El Mariachi is left with no choice but to do whatever it takes to survive the attacks of the gangsters.
