Eldorado, winner of the 2006 Cannes award for the best European film, has the appearance of a classic road movie, with a few twists and turns. Set in Belgium, Elie (Fabrice Adde), a scrawny, young, heroin addict, has broken into Yvan's (Bouli Lanners) house. Yvan, a 40-year-old vintage American car dealer, discovers Elie hiding underneath a bed, claiming to have a knife. Instead of beating him up, Yvan shows a compassionate side and agrees to drive Elie to his parents' house on the border of France. Once on the road, the two men embark on an emotional journey, revisiting failed relationships. Riding in Yvan's 1971 Chevy, they cross the flatlands of eastern Belgium and meet up with several social outcasts, including a man (Phillip Nahon) who collects cars that have been in fatal crashes. When they reach Elie's home, they are met with a cool reception and the reason for Yvan's willingness to offer Elie a ride becomes clear.
