Movie Summary

Elizabeth: The Golden Age is the 2007 sequel to the acclaimed 1998 film Elizabeth, and like the original features a dramatic presentation of the events of England's Queen Elizabeth I's life during the 1500s. Cate Blanchett reprises her role as Elizabeth, the Protestant Queen ruling at at a time when all of Europe was heavily influenced by the Catholic church. Elizabeth's advisor, Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush) is trying his best to find a husband for the Queen, but the strong-willed woman refuses to be wooed by any of the men presented to her. She takes an interest in one man, the handsome explorer Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), but Raleigh falls for Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting, Bess. Meanwhile, King Philip II (Jordi Molla) rules Spain, the most powerful country in Europe. Spain is devoutly Catholic, and Philip seeks the Pope's permission to wage war with Protestant England, Spain's greatest threat. As Elizabeth's only suitor grows closer to another woman, Elizabeth is preoccupied defending her country from Spain's attacks. Elizabeth: The Golden Age won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, and Cate Blanchett was nominated for Best Actress.moreless
