Ella Enchanted is a fairy tale comedy film directed by Tommy O’Haver based on Gail Carson Levine’s novel of the same name that centers on Ella (Anne Hathaway), an intelligent and beautiful young woman in the kingdom of Frell, as she fights for the rights of the oppressed magical creatures, such as elves, giants, and ogres. The fight is hard enough in Frell but what’s worse was the gift of obedience given to her by her fairy godmother Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox), a gift that requires her to do anything and everything she is commanded to do, no matter how horrible or physically impossible it is. She’s not allowed to tell anyone of her curse at the command of her dying mother. After her father remarries a wealthy snob of a woman, Dame Olga (Joanna Lumley), Ella finds herself the minion of her spoiled and royalty obsessed stepsisters, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jennifer Hingham). When Hattie’s demands become too much for her, Ella tries to hunt down Lucinda in the hopes of getting the curse removed, thankfully she’s helped by her house fairy’s (Minnie Driver) boyfriend, Benny whose been cursed into a book, and the not so funny elf Slannen (Aidan McArdle). It’s an wild journey as she faces human-eating ogres, overworked giants, and the ignorant Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy) as Ella stumbles upon a darker plot than magical oppression and horrible fairy gifts!moreless

The New York Times Dave Kehr

The messages blend seamlessly into the fantasy and comedy in what is surely one of the best films for older children in quite some time.

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Likely to cast its spell primarily on adolescent girls, while their elders might well find it more than a little tedious in its familiarity and artificiality.

The glue that holds the sweet teen-fantasy together is star Anne Hathaway, who continues to evolve into a luminous young lead.
