Elvira Madigan is a 1967 Swedish film directed by Bo Wilderberg and starring Pia Degermark, Thommy Berggren, and Lennart Malmer. Taking place in the 18th century, the film tells the story of Elvira Madigan (Degermark) and Lieutenant Sixten Sparre (Berggren), in their torrid love affair that alters their lives completely. Sparre leaves the military and decides to spend the rest of his life with famous tightrope walker Elvira. Sparre's fellow soldiers attempt to bring him back to the army, but he refuses. Elvira then decides to leave the circus and spend her days fawning over Sparre. With no money, the couple begins to see the realities of the life they have chosen. Elvira tries to perform at parties to make money, but slowly she and Sparre realize that they have trapped themselves. Penniless and desperate, the couple then decides to take drastic measures. Inspired by a ballad written by Johan Lindstrom Saxon, Elvira Madigan is a tragic tale of love attempting to fight all odds.moreless
