Emperor Jones is a 1933 drama directed by Dudley Murphy. In this film, Brutus Jones (Paul Robeson) is preparing to leave home and work on the railroad as a porter. When he arrives on the train, he is trained by Jeff (Frank H. Wilson) and the two men become quick friends. After Jeff introduces Brutus to his girlfriend, Undie (Fredi Washington), it does not take long for Jones and Undie to begin having an affair, but Undie has no intentions of leaving Jeff. Brutus' animosity towards Jeff leads to him stabbing his former friend. As punishment for his crimes, Brutus is sentenced to hard labor, but prison life does not set well with Brutus, and he ends up killing a guard and escaping by jumping into a lake. Since he is a strong swimmer, he is able to swim his way to what he thinks is an abandoned island. While on the island Brutus' life is changed forever.
