English Without Tears is a British comedy that is also known by the title Her Man Gilbey. The film was directed by Harold French and was written by Anatole de Grunwald and Terrence Rattigan. It is about an aristocrat named Lady Christabel Beauclerk (Margaret Rutherford) who is a bird lover. She spends her time fighting for territorial rights for them. Her niece, Joan Heseltine (Penelope Ward), falls in love with the family butler, Tom Gilbey (Michael Wilding). Lady Beauclerk is determined to keep her niece from being with someone she considers to be of a lower social class. Gilbey is not interested in Joan at all in the beginning, but as time goes on he begins to realize that he is starting to have similar feelings. Other actors in the film include Lilli Palmer, who plays the role of Brigid Knudsen, and Roland Culver, who plays the role of Sir Cosmo Brandon.
