Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an unusual film about memory, relationships and loss. Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) is a shy, unassuming man who begins a whirlwind romance with a free-spirited young girl, Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet). After a promising beginning, with the contrasting personalities of the two complementing each other, the relationship eventually devolves into a series of fights and recriminations. Clementine thinks that Joel is too boring for her and Joel thinks that Clementine is too needy. The couple break up but both of them find the separation painful. In order to forget Joel, Clementine seeks the help of Dr. Howard Mierzqwiak (Tom Wilkinson), an expert on memory erasure. He promises to erase all memories id the relationship for Clementine so that she can start her life afresh. When Joel finds out he decides to do the same. However, it turns out that memory is a trickier thing than the doctor, Clementine or Joel ever imagined. This unique, often surreal film from 2004 is directed by Michel Gondry from a script by Charlie Kaufman.moreless

If films about coping with memory loss and/or reverse-order storytelling now constitute a mini-genre, then Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is arguably the best of the lot.

This angular and intelligent romantic comedy isn't entirely consistent. Even as you laugh, it's a movie you admire more than love.
