Ethan Frome is a 1993 romantic drama directed by John Madden and based on the 1911 novel by Edith Wharton. Ethan Frome (Liam Neeson) is a man who is trapped in a loveless and tired marriage. When his wife Zenobia "Zeena" (Joan Allen) becomes debilitated from an illness, Ethan decides to hire his wife's cousin Mattie Silver (Patricia Arquette) as a housekeeper and nursemaid. Mattie is a beautiful and happy young woman and, as she takes care of the Zeena and the household, her good-natured spirit clears the dullness from Ethan's heart. He is intrigued and enchanted by Mattie, but the possibility for happiness with Mattie seems out of reach in such a conservative, small-town New England society. But when Mattie shows signs that she returns Ethan's affections, the unthinkable becomes possible. At times a dark and romantic film punctuated occasionally with lighthearted moments of comic relief, Ethan Frome is an interesting twist on the tried-and-true love triangle story.
