Europa Europa is a 1990 German film directed by Agnieszka Holland and starring Marco Hofschneider, Andre Wilms, and Julie Delpy. Based on a true story, the film chronicles Solomon Peel (Hofschneider), the son of a Jewish shoe salesman living during the rise of Adolf Hitler. When his family is attacked in 1938, Solomon flees to Poland. He ends up in an orphanage run by the Stalin regime that is attacked by the Nazis. Using his fluency in German, Solomon is able to convince them that he is an ethnic German and that they should use him as a translator. Solomon is eventually promoted to become part of the Hitler Youth, but he lives with the fear of being revealed as a Jew. Because he is circumcised, Solomon has to be extra careful to hide his identity. Encounters with Leni (Delpy) a vehemently anti-Semitic seductress and a run-in with a homosexual officer almost reveal the truth. The real life Solomon Peel also makes a short cameo in the film.moreless
