Evelyn is a 2002 drama about an Irish family struggling to get by in the 1950s. Desmond Doyle (Pierce Brosnan) may not be wealthy, but he feels fortunate to have his family, including his wife, Charlotte (Mairead Devlin), his two sons, Dermot (Niall Beagan) and Maurice (Hugh McDonagh), and his daughter, Evelyn (Sophie Vavasseur). The Doyles' lives change dramatically and abruptly when Charlotte decides to abandon the family for a better life. Desmond feels crushed and is uncertain about his sudden status as a single father, but he loves his children and is determined to make their lives as comfortable as possible. However, the Irish Supreme Court is not on Desmond's side. Because Desmond has no job and Charlotte has left the family without a woman's presence, the court decides that Maurice, Dermot and Evelyn will have to be placed in orphanages. The fear of losing his entire family spurs Desmond to make a courageous decision: he will fight back against the Irish Supreme Court and win custody of his beloved children.
