Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is director Gus Van Sant's ("Good Will Hunting") 1994 colorful, offbeat adaption of the classic counterculture novel by Tom Robbins. Sissy Hankshaw (Uma Thurman, "Gattaca") is both a model and a dedicated hitchhiker, due to her enormously large thumbs. Even though others see her thumbs as a mutation, Sissy treasures them. As she travels between photo shoots and road adventures, she meets a colorful array of kooks from a lesbian rancher, a male Countess, and an uptight Indian named Julian (Keanu Reeves, "The Matrix"), destined to become her love interest. This colorful, if uneven, comedy-drama combines philosophical musings on free love, drug use, animal rights and sexual politics. The highlight of the film is the array of cameo performances from a wide range of talents, such as Roseanne Barr, Heather Graham ("Drugstore Cowboy"), Pat Morita ("The Karate Kid"), Lorraine Bracco ("The Sopranos") and Crispin Glover ("Back to the Future"). Country crooner K.D. Laing provides the sultry soundtrack.moreless
