Rating:

Exiled is a drama set in Macau in 1998, right when the Portuguese colony is about to be handed back to the Chinese. Macau, though, is a dark place, with a strong criminal underground that has always been part of the city. Wo (Nick Cheung) is a former syndicate man who has chosen to turn over a new leaf and is trying to settle down with his wife (Josie Ho). Needless to say, the crime bosses think little of this and send two Hong Kong hit men, Blaze (Anthony Wong) and Fat (Suet Lam), to eliminate Wo. To their surprise, though, they find he is being protected by two of their former associates, Tai (Francis Ng) and Cat (Roy Cheung). Numerous gunfights and Mexican standoffs ensue, woven in with themes of loyalty and brotherhood. Old bonds between the four men ensure that nothing goes as their bosses planned. The film was directed by experienced Hong Kong director Johnnie To.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    The New York Times

The movie is consistently engrossing and sometimes touching, thanks to its hard yet subtle characterizations and Mr. To's refusal to condescend.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

To packs the moments of contemplation with as much suspense as the action sequences and is a master of ratcheting up tension through small details.

  • 70

    Variety Derek Elley

Cast of regulars blends like those in a late-on Howard Hawks' movie.
