Extreme Measures is a 1996 thriller directed by Michael Apted and starring Hugh Grant, Gene Hackman, Sarah Jessica Parker and David Morse. Based on a novel by Michael Palmer, Extreme Measures tells the story of Dr. Guy Luthan (Hugh Grant). Luthan is an emergency room doctor in New York City who, one day, encounters a very bizarre patient. The patient is wearing a wristband from a hospital that Dr. Luthan has never heard of and has a littany of strange symptoms. When the man dies, Luthan attempts to follow-up on the patient, only to find that the man's body and all of his medical records have disappeared. As Dr. Luthan investigates the man's disappearance, his personal and professional life is destroyed. His home is ransacked, cocaine is planted next to his bed, he is arrested and convicted of drug possession, his friends abandon him and he loses his license to practice medicine. Desperate to uncover the truth, Dr. Luthan's investigation leads him to a mysterious medical organization led by Dr. Lawrence Myrick (Gene Hackman).
