Eyes Wide Shut, a 1999 drama, is the last film directed by Stanley Kubrick. The movie follows Dr. Bill (Tom Cruise) and Alice (Nicole Kidman) Harford, a young married couple, as they journey into an underworld of bizarre rituals and orgies. Bill and Alice attend a Christmas ball at a sumptuous New York mansion, where Bill is called upstairs to attend to an overdosed prostitute who was hired by the party's host, Victor (Sydney Pollack). The same night, Bill meets his old friend, Nick Nightingale (Todd Field), a pianist hired to play at high-society engagements. Nick tells Bill about a house at which he played blindfolded but glimpsed an orgy and gives Bill the password. The day after the party, Bill is shocked when Alice reveals her sexual fantasy about a naval officer they met on vacation. Unsure of his relationship with Alice, Bill decides to visit the mansion Nick told him about. When a woman is found murdered and Nick disappears, Bill realizes that his curiosity may have a high price.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 90

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Kubrick left one more brilliantly provocative tour de force as his epitaph.

  • 90

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A riveting, thematically probing, richly atmospheric and just occasionally troublesome work, a deeply inquisitive consideration of the extent of trust and mutual knowledge possible...

  • 88

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The reconciliation at the end of the film is the one scene that doesn't work; a film that intrigues us because of its loose ends shouldn't try to tidy up.
