Falling Sky is a 1999 family drama about a mother and daughter struggling with alcoholism. Reese Nicholson (Karen Allen) leaves Tennessee hoping to leave her drunken life style behind. She and her teen daughter, Emily (Brittany Murphy), relocate to Las Vegas. Reese starts working as a waitress at a local diner, and Emily enjoys her new high school, especially her English class with Mr. Hanes (Vincent Riotta). Their promising new life quickly crumbles though when financial pressures begin to weigh on Reese. She quits her job and switches to dancing at a bar, which leads to her drinking again. The pain of watching her mother in a stupor every night leads Emily to start hanging out with a booze and drugs crowd at school and loses interest in her studies. Directors Russ Brandt and Brian J. De Palma capture the sad, downward spiral of substance abuse and the complex connections between mothers and daughters in this emotional drama.
