Fanny Hill (Part 1) is the first installment of a BBC miniseries about a young woman who turns to prostitution to make ends meet. Young Fanny Hill, (Rebecca Night) a young lady from the Lancashire countryside, is now an orphan after her parents' bout with smallpox. Looking for an opportunity to make money, her friend Esther Davies (Emma Stansfield) convinces her to come to London and live in Mrs. Brown's (Alison Steadman) house of girls; Fanny eventually learns that, more than a simple place to live, the young ladies there have sex for money. The adventure begins right away, as her fellow working girls introduce Fanny to sex by spying on Mrs. Brown and her rather large boyfriend, a skill that proves to be a moot point when Fanny's first encounter is with Mr. Croft, (Philip Jackson) an older man who forces himself upon Fanny, but doesn't quite finish the job. When she meets Charles Standing, (Alex Robertson) a young man who seems different than the average John, Fanny falls for him, finding both love and sex in the process. But when the young man's father turns out to be none other than Mr. Croft, Fanny's life takes a possible turn for the worse. Screenwriter Andrew Davies lends his pen to this witty adaptation of the famous pornographic novel by John Cleland, that is as witty and charming as it is inappropriate.moreless
