Movie Summary

Tim Story

Dr. Reed Richards is a brilliant scientist studying cosmic energy by way of genius experiments. Utilizing the space station of his rival, Dr. Victor von Doom, to study the effects in space, Richards brings his team along with Doom. There's his chief researcher Sue Storm and two NASA Pilots, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm. But when miscalculations are made and a storm of cosmic energy gathers ahead of schedule, the five are blasted with large amounts of the energy, granting them super powers upon their return to Earth. Dr. Richards can manipulate his stretchy body like rubber. Johnny Storm can "Flame On" and engulf himself safely in fire allowing for flight. Sue Storm can create force fields and become invisible. And Ben Grimm, who suffered the most exposure, is physically transformed permanently into a massively strong brutish rock monster nicknamed "The Thing." Together the four keep Earth safe, and fight Dr. Doom, who has gained his own power of electric manipulation and is currently not too happy about his financial ruin after the failed expedition!

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

Fails to be anything more than a mild summertime diversion. Based on the Marvel comic book, it's a prototypical air conditioner movie.

  • 50

    Variety Joe Leydon

A wildly uneven, sporadically slapdash action-adventure that amuses in fits and starts.

  • 40

The New York Times Dana Stevens

Compared with the psychological probing and spiritual brooding of "Batman Begins," Fantastic Four is proudly dumb, loud and inconsequential.
