Far and Away is a 1992 drama directed by Ron Howard. Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise) is facing eviction in Ireland after the death of his father. He decides to kill their landlord, Daniel Christie (Robert Prosky). When he fails, he is sentenced to a duel with Christie's manager, Stephen Chase (Thomas Gibson). With the help of Daniel's dissatisfied daughter, Shannon (Nicole Kidman), he escapes and the two leave for America. They arrive in Boston, and Joseph and Shannon begin their new life. Shannon works in a chicken processing plant and Joseph takes up bare-knuckle boxing. The two are living the American dream until Joseph loses a match and his handlers take all their money. Now, left hungry in the middle of winter, the two face starvation. Meanwhile, Shannon's parents suffer a tragedy and come to America make amends with their daughter. Struggling to survive, Joseph hands Shannon back to her parents and heads west to work on their railroad in search of the elusive American dream.
