Fat City is a 1972 drama directed by John Huston and starring Stacy Keach, Jeff Bridges, and Susan Tyrrell. Keach plays Billy Tully, a boxer whose golden years are long behind him. He once had a shot at the big time but a crushing defeat put him out of the competition. Years later he returns to the gym to get back in shape and spars a little with a teenage boxer named Ernie Munger (Bridges). Munger has a lot of raw talent and Tully encourages the young man to pursue a professional career. The two boxers are on opposite ends of their careers, but they both want the same things. They work their way through their personal relationships, negotiating between their boxing careers and the women they go home to. Tyrell plays Oma, an aged alcoholic who develops a relationship with Tully. She received a 1973 Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of the tough barfly. Fat City is a gritty film about athletes on the fringes of the sports industry and is often named one of Huston's greatest films.moreless
