Father's Doing Fine is the 1952 British classic that follows the harrowing lives of an impoverished mother and four daughters. There are a lot of subtle, wry laughs as three of the daughters, Gerda (Mary Germaine), Bicky (Susan Stephen), and Catherine (Virginia McKenna), sort out their own romances. Gerda is sorting out her marriage with a flighty artist. Bicky is in love with a quirky student, and Catherine is in love with her landlord's son. Meanwhile the fourth daughter, Doreen (Diane Hart), and her husband Dougall (Richard Attenborough), are about to give birth to their first child. The story follows the crises and anxiety surrounding the birth of the child and the relationships surrounding the family. Their mother, Lady Buckering (Heather Thatcher), is also trying to find her place, as Dr. Drew (George Thorpe) begs her to marry him. The comedic story spins around at a frantic pace as the house full of women deal with the anxieties of marriage, romance, childbirth, and family life together.moreless
