Faust is a 1926 horror film directed by F.W. Murnau. Mephisto (Emil Jannings), a demon in Hell, makes a bet with an Archangel (Werner Fuetterer) that he can make a devout human lose his faith and turn to the dark side. If Mephisto can succeed in his goal, the forces of Hell will be able to take over the Earth. Mephisto descends from Hell to tempt Faust (Gosta Eckman), an aging alchemist whose village is suffering from a horrible plague. Faust has been praying for angels to stop the sickness, but he is becoming discouraged that there are no signs of help from Heaven. When Mephisto offers Faust a chance to end the sickness and become young again in return for his soul, Faust agrees to the deal. But when he meets Gretchen (Camilla Horn), a young, innocent girl with whom he falls in love, Faust longs for redemption and a way to reclaim his soul.
