Fiddler on the Roof is a 1971 musical about a Jewish family living in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. Tevye is a milkman living in the town of Anatevka with his wife and five daughters. Though the family is not poor, Tevye must work hard to keep food on the table. He also struggles with the anti-Semitic attitudes of many of the townspeople and the fact that he must find a way to give his daughters adequate dowries when they marry. Tevya appears to get some good news when he successfully manages to marry off his daughter, Tzeitel, to a rich butcher named Lazar Wolf. However, things take a turn for the worse when Tzeitel decides that she wants to marry her childhood sweetheart, Motel Kamzoil. When another of his daughters decides to marry a Gentile, Tevye's world is thrown into even more disorder. Meanwhile, a far more dire fate awaits the entire family as they struggle to find happiness in increasingly difficult circumstances.
