Finding Neverland is a 2004 biographical drama starring Johnny Depp as the creator of "Peter Pan." In the early 1900s, the once-successful playwright James M. Barrie (Johnny Depp) now only writes flops, much to the displeasure of his producer, Charles Frohman (Dustin Hoffman). Then Barrie meets the Llewelyn Davies family and he finds new inspiration for his imagination. The recently widowed Sylvia (Kate Winslet) and her mother, are raising her family of four adventurous boys: Peter (Freddie Highmore), Jack (Joe Prospero), George (Nick Roud) and Michael (Luke Spill). Although Sylvia's stern mother, Mrs. Emma du Maurier (Julie Christie), does not approve of a grown man playing with children, their mother recognizes that the boys seem to thrive with his attention. The friendship also becomes the basis of Barrie's most successful work and a lifelong connection. Marc Forster ("Word War Z") directs this enchanting drama based on the play "The Man Who Was Peter Pan" by Allan Knee.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

Gently seductive, genuinely tender and often moving without being maudlin.

  • 80

    Variety Todd McCarthy

An impeccably made and genuinely moving account of how Scottish author J.M. Barrie came to write "Peter Pan."

  • 50

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

A handsome-looking film about the writer and his unripe inspirations, the actor Johnny Depp neither soars nor crashes, but moseys forward with vague purpose and actorly restraint.
