Fireball 500 is a 1966 classic written by William Asher and Leo Townsend, and directed by Leo Townsend, featuring singers Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. "Fireball" Dave Owens (Frankie Avalon) is an aspiring stock car driver, but to make ends meet is persuaded by Martha Brian (Julie Parrish) to take part in a cross country road race in a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda. As it turns out, however, Charlie Bigg (Harvey Lembeck) has duped Dave into delivering moonshine. Challenges abound, but along the way he gets help from the beautiful, and generally reserved, Jane Harris (Annette Funicello) and fellow stock car driver Sonny Leander Fox (Fabian). In addition to the dangers of bootlegging, Dave and Leander engage in a largely friendly rivalry for the heart of Jane Harris. While the movie features actors and actresses typically associated with the zany and lighthearted beach movies of earlier times, Fireball 500 has a decidedly serious slant which leads to a genre crossing classic worth revisiting.moreless
