Firelight is a romantic drama film directed by William Nicholson that follows the aftermath of an agreement made between beautiful and passionate Swiss Elisabeth Laurier (Sophie Marceau) and struggling British landowner Charles Godwin (Stephen Dillane) in 1838. The deal was as such – if Elisabeth bore a child for Godwin, a thing his own catatonic wife would never be able to do, then Godwin would pay off the debts of Elisabeth’s father. Though knowing that she could never be part of her daughter’s life, Elisabeth spends seven years compiling watercolors for every memorable moment in her daughter’s life. When she is hired by Charles’s sister-in-law Constance (Lia Williams) as a governess for Louisa Godwin (Dominique Belcourt), Elisabeth tries to turn the spoiled, willful, and generally unlovable child into a daughter who could choose her own path when she grows up – one with an education, better manners, and the ability to be loved. It is only though with the magic of the firelight where time stands still that Elisabeth can begin to have a relationship with both the daughter she had to give up and the man who stole her heart.moreless
