First a Girl follows Elizabeth (Jesse Mathews), an everyday delivery girl with large ambitions, on her quest for fame as a music hall singer. When turned down at her first audition, Elizabeth falls into a depression and seeks comfort from a fellow audition reject, Victor (Sonnie Hale). When the two eventually become friends, Victor is offered a role in the music hall production as a woman. Unfortunately, he loses his voice and Elizabeth takes the opportunity to step into the gap, pretending onstage to play a man playing a woman. As she becomes successful and enters her luminous career under the stage name Mr. Victoria, she in turn becomes trapped as a 24-hours-a-day male imposter. The plot thickens when Robert (Griffith Jones), an attractive young man and engaged to Princess Mironoff (Anna Lee), catches Elizabeth's eye and bonds with the supposed Victor in a not so brotherly friendship. First a Girl inspired the hit musical Victor/Victoria and opened a new door for cross-dressing in the entertainment business.moreless
