Flakes is a quirky 2007 comedy about dreams gone awry. Neal Downs (Aaron Stanford) manages a small restaurant in New Orleans, owned by offbeat entrepreneur Willie (Christopher Lloyd). The restaurant, Flakes, specializes exclusively in cereal, and although the concept is a little unusual, the cereal bar diners are loyal and close-knit. While managing Flakes, Neal dreams of striking it big as a rock star. His girlfriend, Pussy Katz (Zooey Deschanel), is a waitress who's as creative as her name, and holds similar dreams of becoming a fashion designer and artist. Realizing that neither of them will get anywhere as Flakes employees, Pussy Katz offers to help Neal launch his rock star career. But Neal finds himself nervous in the face of change, preferring to keep his humdrum, comfortable job at Flakes. Willie, Neal and Pussy Katz are all shocked when a rival cereal bar opens across the street and threatens to run Flakes out of business. Neal channels all his energy into making sure Flakes comes out on top, and Pussy Katz is afraid he may give up on his dreams entirely. It's up to her to show Neal what other opportunities are waiting for him.moreless

A business course on cutthroat capitalism disguised as a slacker comedy: That's the kindest way to describe Michael Lehmann's Flakes.

Unless you happen to be one yourself, chances are pretty good that you'll take an immediate dislike to the self-satisfied hipsters who populate this disappointing comedy.
