Movie Summary

2006
Rating:
R
Flannel Pajamas is an independent romantic drama film directed by Jeff Lipsky that takes a sincere look at relationships in how they can burn bright and snuff out fast when personal baggage and history get in the way. Stuart (Justin Kirk) and Nicole’s (Julianne Nicholson) relationship started out in the typical way – they were introduced by their friends, their first date was a magical experience in diner on a rainy night, and it seemed almost too easy to have such an unforced pairing. Until, that is, reality hits. Stuart is slick but generous while Nicole is timid but frank. He dislikes some of her closest friends while she gets annoyed by his brother. He tunes her out and she tends to brood. Even as their faults get on each other’s nerves, their relationship takes shape into one that viewers can relate to – one affected by the little things, from religion to their careers, friendships and daily stresses.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Mr. Lipsky's screenplay, a messy collection of fragments arranged chronologically, adds up to one of the most intimate screen portraits of a relationship ever attempted.

  • 50

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Visually, the film is without flair or ambition, conveying no sense of atmosphere or mood. But the performances put it over.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

For all the time we spend watching Justin and Nicole negotiate their needs, we have no idea who these people are.
