Flat Top is a 1952 film about Commander Dan Collier (Sterling Hayden). Collier is in command of training pilots on United States Navy carriers in Korean waters during the Korean War. The commander has flashbacks of the rough days during the air battles against Japan in World War II. He recalls the arrival of Lieutenant Joe Rodgers (Richard Carlson) and his squadron. They came to help fight with Collier during the climax of World War II. The film even includes actual newsreel footage from World War II. Quickly, Collier jumps back to reality, as he is facing a fight in the form of a new commander on board the ship. Also, he prepares to do battle with Koreans on the field. Directed by Lesley Selander, Flat Top accurately depicts navy operations, contains authentic footage from World War II, and includes plenty of combat scenes. This war drama amazes not only war enthusiasts, but history lovers of all kinds.
