Flesh & Blood is director Paul Verhoven's first Hollywood feature, a gritty medieval saga set in Western Europe during the black plague. The year is 1501 and a nobleman (Fernando Hillbeck) offers mercenary leader Martin (Rutger Hauer) riches in exchange for helping win back control of his city. After the nobleman betrays and banishes the mercenary band, they retaliate by kidnapping beautiful Princess Agnes (Jennifer Jason Leigh) the betrothed of the nobleman's son Stephen (Tom Burlinson). Even as Stephen seeks allies on a desperate quest to recover his beloved, Agnes finds herself tormented and molested by Martin in starkly depicted ordeals of brutality and violence. As Martin takes Agnes for his 'official' lover, it shocks both to discover growing bonds of lust and love between them. Even as her former betrothed mounts a daring rescue for her hand, Agnes finds herself torn between the torments of blood, and the pleasures of flesh in this stylish, graphic and violent medieval thriller.
