Following Sean is a 2005 documentary that explores how a child raised in the San Francisco alternative lifestyle grew up into a very different adulthood. In 1969, director Ralph Arlyck captured 4-year-old Sean Farrell on film as he independently made his way around the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. At the time, Sean's hippie parents allowed the child to consume marijuana, which he preferred to eat rather than smoke. Sean was born into the era of free love, open relationships and open drug use, and his San Francisco neighborhood was the heart of the late 1960s scene. Thirty years later, the filmmaker tracked down Sean to find out what sort of adult would emerge from his unconventional upbringing. Now a husband and father himself, the adult Sean reflects on his childhood and how that experience informed his own life choices. The film also follows the life journey of Sean's parents as well as Arlyck's own story of moving away from the idealism of that time.moreless

    The New York Times

What emerges is a liberal meditation on freedom and compromise, and a nostalgia trip graced by eloquent restraint.

    Los Angeles Times Gene Seymour

What emerges from Arlyck's musings is a penetrating cinematic essay on how generations in the last century struggled to take hold of history and reconfigure the shape of daily life.

    Variety Ronnie Scheib

As fascinating as it is frustrating.
