Fools of Fortune is a 1990 British drama directed by Pat O'Connor and written by Micheal Hirst. It is based on the novel of the same name by Willian Trevor. Set in the Ireland of the 1920s. The Quintons are a Protestant family living on and operating an estate. Mr. Quinton is well-respected and manages to stay out of the ongoing political turmoil. The his family is thrown into chaos when one of his workers is murdered by Republicans. The family is blamed for selling the man out to the British. In retribution, their estate is burned and everyone is killed, except for Mrs Quinton (Julie Christie) and 8 year old Willie (Sean T. McClory). Willie (Iain Glen) grows up bitter and hateful. He never forgets or forgives Sergeant Rudkin (Neil Dudgeon) the man who killed his father. After years of struggle, Willie finds emotional solace in a loving relationship with Marianne (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio).
