For Love of the Game is a 1999 sports film directed by Sam Raimi and based on the novel of the same name by Michael Shaara. Long-time veteran pitcher Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is starting for the Detroit Tigers in a meaningless game against the New York Yankees. Upon waiting for his girlfriend, Jane Aubrey (Kelly Preston), he finds out from manager Gary Wheeler (Brian Cox) that he is going to sell the team and trade him to the San Francisco Giants after 19 years with the team. Jane also tells him that she is moving to London and leaving him. As Billy pitches in this game against the Yankees, he reflects on his relationship with Jane and his career with the Tigers. He also begins to dominate the game and has pitched a perfect game through 8 innings without even realizing it.
