For Me and My Gal is a 1942 backstage musical set in the years around World War I. Jo Hayden (Judy Garland) and Harry Palmer (Gene Kelly) meet as vaudeville performers and almost immediately develop an attraction. The two form an act together that is popular enough to get them booked at New York's Palace Theater. The night before their first performance at the Palace, however, Harry is drafted into the army. In order to postpone his service, he purposely breaks his hand. At the same time, Jo hears her brother was killed in action at the front and tells Harry she wants nothing more to do with him because of his cowardice. To win Jo back, Harry tries desperately to enlist but learns that his hand is permanently damaged, making him ineligible. How can Harry prove himself to Jo? For Me and My Gal is directed by choreography legend Busby Berkley.
