For the Love of Dolly is a documentary film that portrays the life of five individuals obsessed with their idol, Dolly Parton. Each of these fans has their own way of dealing with their obsession and director Tai Uhlmann captures them on film as they make their way to Dollywood. The gay couple, Patric Parkey and Harrell Gabehart, are Dolly Patron's biggest fans. They read all her books, have seen a couple of her live shows and live by her motto "to accept who you are." They meet Jeanette Williams, David Schmidli and Melisa Rastellini, also fans of the country singer and head off on a pilgrimage to Dollyland, the singer's amusement park in Tennessee. The road trip takes almost a year, as Tai records the group's interactions with the public every step of the way. The director mixes interviews and home movies from each of the cast members to help her tell the story of why they love the singer and how they connect to her personality. As the group reaches their destination, emotion and happiness enter the room when Dolly Parton herself makes a personal appearance.
