Forbidden Planet is a classic science fiction film released in 1956. Directed by Fred M. Wilcox and written by Cyril Humem, the film stars Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis. Forbidden Planet was the first science fiction film to be set entirely on another planet in deep space, away from Earth and is considered to be one of the greatest science fiction films from the 1950s. In the 23rd century, the United Planets Cruiser C57-D has been sent to the planet Altair IV on a mission to discover the fate of an expedition that was sent to establish a colony on the planet 20 years earlier. After achieving planetary orbit, the cruiser receives a radio transmission from the surface. Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) of the Earth expedition says he needs no assistance and cautions the crew not to land. The starship's captain, Commander John J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen), dismisses the warning and insists Morbius provide landing coordinates. Morbius reluctantly complies. The crew of the C57-D is greeted on the planet by Robby the Robot, who takes Adams, Lieutenant Jerry Farman (Jack Kelly), and Lieutenant "Doc" Ostrow (Warren Stevens) to meet Dr. Morbius. At his home, Morbius explains that an unknown force killed nearly all of the other members of his expedition, vaporizing their starship, the Bellerophon, as it tried to leave the planet. Only Morbius, his wife (who has died of natural causes), and their teenage daughter Altaira (Anne Francis) survived. Morbius fears the crew of the C57-D will also meet the same fate. There is plenty of suspense and excitement as the crew of the C57-D attempt to unravel the mysteries of Altair IV.moreless
