Francis Joins the WACS is the fifth offering in the series of films featuring the comedic adventures of Lieutenant Peter Sterling (Donald O'Connor) and his equine sidekick, Francis the Talking Mule (voiced by Chill Wills). GI Sterling has left the military and is working as a bank teller. He receives orders to return to active duty; due to a computer error, he is sent to a WAC unit headed by Major Louise Simpson (Lynn Bari). On the train during his journey to the mistaken assignment, he encounters the voice of his old buddy, Francis. Francis also sees Sterling and manages a transfer to Fort Chase so the duo can reunite. Once he arrives at Fort Chase, Sterling realizes he has been confused with a female camouflage expert, Bunny Sterling. With Francis adding constant comic relief, Sterling stays to help the WACs at Fort Chase train for a camouflage demonstration judged by General Ben Kaye (Chill Wills), even though Major Simpson believes he is out to sabotage rather than camouflage the female troops.moreless
