Frauds, the Australian debut of director Stephen Elliot, is a dark comedy exploring the many quirks of insurance investigator Roland Copping (Phil Collins). Roland uses his position to interfere with the lives of others, delighting in manipulating his clients with bizarre games. All this is before he meets Jonathan Wheats (Hugo Weaving) and his wife Beth (Josephine Byrnes). Jonathan and his best friend, Michael Allen (Peter Mochrie), also have a penchant for childish pranks. One night, Beth comes home and discovers a burglar in her kitchen. She panics and kills the intruder with a crossbow, only later realizing that he looked like Michael. While Beth deals with her self-defense plea, Jonathan files a claim for a missing set of knives he assumes was stolen. The Wheats' insurance company sends out none other than Roland Copping to investigate the claim. Roland, suspecting something amiss, plays his usual games only to find that Jonathan is a more clever opponent than he anticipated. Things quickly begin to escalate to outrageous proportions in this off-kilter comedy.moreless
