French Connection II follows Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman), a hard-nosed cop from New York, on assignment in France to uncover and disband the drug ring run by Frenchman Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey). After being throughly demoralized, mocked, and belittled by the French police department where he has been sent to complete his mission, Popeye decides to go it alone, but struggles with the French-English language barrier and the lack of any true support in France. While Popeye is searching for Charnier, Charnier is also looking for Popeye, and after several near escapes, Popeye is captured by Charnier's henchmen for interrogation. While there, he is tortured by being injected with heroin enough times to make him addicted, and we see the addiction wear away at Popeye. Finally tired of this game, Charnier has Popeye deposited back at the police station, and it is up to the French police to help Popeye regain his health so he may have one final match with Charnier.moreless
