Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 comedy written by Fannie Flagg, and directed by Jon Avnet. The story revolves around the life of Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates), a disgruntled housewife who instead of facing her problems head on, chooses to instead drown her sorrows in candy bars. But one day, while waiting outside the room while her husband visits an aunt in the nursing home because the old woman didn't like her, she meets Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). Ninny loves to tell stories, and throughout the course of several visits, she tells Evelyn the story of a woman from Whistle Stop, Alabama, a town that has since been abandoned. The story is about Imogene "Idgie" Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson), a young woman who in the 1920s went through a great deal of adversity in her own life but was eventually able to overcome it. As Evelyn hears more and more of Idgie's story, she finds inner strength within herself as she builds confidence, all the while gaining a lifelong friend in Ninny.
