Funny Lady is a 1975 romantic comedy movie by director Herbert Ross, starring Barbara Streisand, James Caan, Omar Sharif, Roddy McDowall, and Ben Vereen. A sequel to the 1964 Broadway musical and the following 1968 film, Funny Girl, Funny Lady is a highly fictionalized account of comedienne Fanny Brice’s late life and marriage to songwriter and empresario Billy Rose. Barbara Streisand stars as Fanny Brice, with James Caan playing Billy Ross, in this award nominated comedy about the lovable laugh lady. The movie is not only about jokes and laughter, but also about love and the sometimes less than perfect relationship between the outgoing Fanny Brice and her husband Billy Rose. While the film is set in the 1930s, some things never change and audiences across the decades can find something to empathize with in the couple’s quiry relationship. Funny Lady was nominated for five 1976 Oscar Awards, as well as three 1976 Golden Globe Awards.
