2002
Rating:
R
G, a loose adaptation of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, follows the story of hip hop impresario G (Richard T. Jones) and his quest to win back the love of his life, Sky Hightower (Chenoa Maxwell). After college, G falls for the upwardly mobile Sky, but she rebuffs him choosing a more successful man to be her boyfriend. After that rejection, G spends the next ten years builing his music empire so that he can move into high society and win the affection of Sky. However, when noveau riche G descends on the Hamptons to pursue Sky, her husband, Chip Hightower (Blair Underwood), reacts unfavorably. Chip looks down on how G makes his money while becoming suspicious of his motives for inserting himself into their lives. This modern take on The Great Gatsby is a timely portrait of old and new money in the Hamptons in the age of hip hop.
