Movie Summary

Director:

Released:
1999
Rating:
PG

Galaxy Quest is a movie that parodies a number of classic science fiction TV series, such as Star Trek, as it centers on the cast of long-cancelled cult classic TV series, Galaxy Quest, whose career highlights now seem to involve signing autographs and reliving their catch phrases for fans at conventions. Of course, not all of the actors realize or are content with their status as icons of a defunct TV series. Cocky Jason Nesmith maintains an A-list ego and when a group of people claiming to be aliens called Thermians, Nesmith takes it as a group of fans wanting him for a film cameo. He soon discovers that the Thermians are in fact aliens and in dire need of the "heroes" of the ship seen in the Galaxy Quest videos broadcasted into space. As the Thermians take each of the old cast, including the buxom Gwen DeMarco, intelligent and resentful Sir Alexander Dane, slightly spaced Fred Kwan, and nervous Tommy Webber, the former cast has to pretend to be their counterparts to fight an actual space villain, Sarris. Their only hope relies in the geek knowledge of devoted fan Brandon in order to help them save the universe.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Fast, light and funny, Galaxy Quest has a wide, generation-spanning appeal--and you don't have to be a die-hard Trekkie to enjoy it.

  • 80

    Variety Joe Leydon

One of the holiday movie season's more pleasant surprises. A mischievously clever and slickly commercial sci-fi comedy.

  • 70

The New York Times Lawrence Van Gelder

It keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek, offers a few genuine laughs, moves swiftly, if not at warp speed, and is led by a talented cast.
