Gardens of Stone is a 1987 drama about the trials and tribulations of an Arlington Cemetery home guard during the Vietnam War era. The guard, Sgt. Clell Hazard (James Caan), has come to the conclusion that the U.S. cannot win the war in Vietnam and should get out as soon as possible. His views are contrasted with those of a young solder named Private Jackie Willow (D.B. Sweeney), who would love nothing more than to serve his country in war. Though Hazard cannot officially turn Jackie off of the idea to fight, he does give him an insightful look at the perks of stateside military life during such a tumultuous time. To do this, he encourages Jackie to renew a romance with his former girlfriend, Rachel (Mary Stuart Masterson), and eventually pulls enough strings to change the young man's mind. Gardens of Stone was originally based on a book written by Nicholas Proffitt and adapted in the movie by Ronald Bass.moreless
