Whirlwind is a 1951 western directed by John English that features the famous singing cowboy Gene Autry. Autry plays an expert postal inspector who has been brought in to assist Agent Smiley Burnette (who is posing as a horse doctor) who is tracking down the culprit of a continuing series of mail robberies. They believe that the man behind the robberies is Big Jim Lassiter (played by the veteran character actor Thurston Hall). Lassiter's associate, Wade Trimble (played by Harry Lauter) tells Autry that the crimes were indeed committed by Lassiter and that he has been involved in other crimes as well. Now it is up to Autry and Burnette to round up Big Jim and stop him from doing any more nefarious deeds! To do this Autry disguises his identity and pretends he is the Whirlwind, a roving robber. And as always Gene sings in this film, harmonizing wonderfully with Smiley on the novelty song Twiddle O'Twill. The song was co-written by Gene and Fred Rose, who is credited for having discovered Hank Williams Senior.moreless
