Gentle Giant, based on the novel Gentle Ben by Walt Morey, is a 1967 film that follows the story of Mark Wedlow (Clint Howard, brother of Ron Howard) and his pet bear, Ben played by Bruno the bear. The film served to launch a television series called Gentle Ben, that would run for two seasons in the late 1960s and also featured the stars of the movie. In the film, when poachers kill Ben's mother leaving him alone in the Florida Everglades, Mark and his family adopt the bear. As the two become inseparable friends, they get embroiled in mischievious adventures. Mark and Ben are helped out by Mark's parents, wildlife officer Tom (Dennis Weaver) and stay-at-home mom Ellen (Vera Miles). Together, the family protects Ben from poachers while forming a lasting bond with the seemingly ferocious animal. Gentle Giant is a heartwarming story of friendship and family designed for viewers of all ages.
