Movie Summary

Director:
Mike Hodges (II)
Released:
1971
Rating:
R
Get Carter is a kick-ass 1971 crime film directed by British filmmaker Mike Hodges. The film stars Michael Caine in what is undoubtedly one of his best performances. Get Carter centers around a man heart set on avenging the death of his brother. Jack Carter (Caine) returns to his hometown of Newcastle to attend his brother's funeral. Although his death was said to be an accident, Jack is convinced his brother was murdered. That is when Jack takes it upon himself to find all those responsible for the death of his brother. He wades tirelessly through a stream of fabricated stories, incriminating evidence, threats, and deceit on a mission to find the culprit. Jack's strength and determination is comparable to that of the Terminator or Walker from Point Blank - he will not stop at anything. Get Carter also stars Ian Hendry, John Osborne and Britt Ekland. Recommended for all those interested in British crime film and/or Michael Caine.

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

It is not a terrible movie, and Stallone has appeared in far worse. It's just that, although diverting, it's too routine for its own good.

  • 20

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A useless remake of Mike Hodges' 1971 British gangland cult classic.

  • 10

The New York Times A.O. Scott

So minimally plotted that not only does it lack subtext or context, but it also may be the world's first movie without even a text.
